VISP project

These are illustrations I've done at work for a guide book being published by a psychiatric support group. They're not my best work, but they are the first large project I've done in a good few years, so I'm very pleased with them. There was a certain element of hurry involved in the project, which is something I'm not used to, but will have to learn. Deadlines were never my strong point. They were painted with gouache on airbrush paper, though by rights they should have been painted on water stretched cartridge paper and would have been if I were deeper in the groove.

The time constraint also meant that I didn't obsess about details as I normally would have done. From that perspective, I am not happy about the lack of shadows and highlights on many of the figures, but I have to cut the cord and move on to the next project and try to be more concise in future.

Medusa II

Quink, biro & bleach

I'm so rusty, I've started playing about again. At the moment I'm just going over old ground until I find my way. This is just messing about and although its a Medusa image, this isn't the same image as the heavy weight Medusa I've long wanted to do. I'm not really happy with it, the figure leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm glad I did it.

I planned on painting some large oils of mythological subjects. Maybe now I'll finally get around to doing them?

Arnold 01

These images were done for a childrens book called Arnold (thats him above). The author paid for them himself and had quite a lot to say about composition, colouring and so on. It was actually a very time consuming project but I learned a lot along the way. The images themselves were pretty easy and I enjoyed painting them. This was the first time I'd used guache paints too.

The story revolves around an unknown type of animal found in the Amazon rainforest. One of these, the afore mentioned Arnold embarks on a series of adventures eventually ending up in Denmark. The author had originally told these stories to his kids and after years of making up stories had written them in to a manuscript for his grand children which he intended to publish, paying the costs himself if necessary. I don't know if the book was ever published.
